Advice on your water bill…
I lived such an easy, carefree life when I was younger that I did’t even realise there was such thing as a ‘water bill’ I thought it was something that came free with the house!
However it seems I am not the only one! I’ve had a few messages regarding water bills lately so I have taken the most frequently asked questions and answered them here for you 🙂
Do I HAVE to pay a for my water?
Unfortunately, yes. If you don’t then they could take legal action against you and even send round the bailiffs!
Who needs to pay my water bill?
If you own your own property, you will be responsible for your water bill.
If you rent the property then I would check your tenancy agreement as it will tell you if you or your landlord is responsible for the water bill.
I am in a shared house, who pays the water bill?
Again, check your tenancy agreement as in some student accommodation the landlord will pay the water bill. If it is down to the tenants to pay then you are all liable to share the bill.
Do I pay for how much water I use?
There are 2 ways to pay for your water…
- A water meter – this calculates how much water you are using and you are billed on usage (usually found outside your property under a black plastic cover)
- Assessed volume charge – This is based on the size of your property and how many people live in the property
Which is the cheapest?
It depends on your water usage. The less water you use, the cheaper it will be – so turn off that tap when brushing your teeth!
How can I set up my water bill?
Contact your local water company who will happily help you set up your bill. You may need to take a meter reading on the day you move into the property.
I don’t think I can afford to pay my bill
Some water companies can offer help to some people on benefits or low income. Call your local water company to enquire about this.
How can I save money on my water bills?
- Take a shower instead of a bath
- Fix any leaking/dripping taps
- Turn off the taps whilst brushing your teeth
- Head to ‘Save Water Save Money’ and see if you’re entitled to any freebies which can bring down the price of your water bill.
As I have only recently moved into my new property I am going to ask for a water meter to be installed to hopefully keep my bills to a minimum, I have been informed by a friend that it can take quite some time to get a meter installed so I had better apply pretty soon-ish me thinks.
