WhatsApp, iMessage and Snapchat could be banned in the UK.

David Cameron’s latest proposal has caused outrage amongst smartphone users as he aims to target our favourite instant messaging apps in a bit to clamp down on terrorists.

To me it sounds slightly ridiculous, however, the Conservative Government feels that banning the private messaging outlets will help stop terrorists from freely communicating with one another via private messaging. The Prime Minister hopes to make it impossible for them to communicate.

David Cameron says: “I will make sure it is a comprehensive piece of legislation that makes sure we do not allow terrorists safe space to communicate with each other.

“Are we going to allow a means of communication where it simply isn’t possible to do that? My answer to that question is ‘no we must not.'”

However, I’m sure rather than banning the apps altogether, they will be able to negotiate on some new restrictions instead which would make much more sense.

The proposal, which is thought to be further discussed later in the year, has caused outrage amongst the younger generation, many who solely rely on these messaging services as means of communication with their friends.

It comes at a bad time as WhatsApp have just announced that they will be discontinuing the App on Nokia and Blackberry phones. Desperate handset users have even set up an online petition to try and get these plans changed. And I don’t blame them! I think I’d struggle to live without WhatsApp now that I use it on a daily basis, let alone if all three of my favourite apps were to go.
