From this Saturday (13/01/18), shops will no longer be allowed to charge customers extra for the convenience of card payment.

A UK ban on shops that charge customers for paying by card comes into effect this week.

The law comes into place on Saturday 13th January 2018, and means card payment won’t have any additional cost to the customer.

This new rule applies to any UK company selling to UK customers. It also covers payment methods such as ApplePay and PayPal.

Currently, a rule states that companies should only be able to charge card paying customers the price that it costs the retailer to process a card transaction. Nevertheless, Treasury figures discovered that the value of surcharge was around £473 million in 2016. This means retailers were making a huge profit from these extra card fees.
