Bank Holiday Rail Strike! How to reclaim ticket money!

For those of you who haven’t heard, travel chaos is set to hit us over the bank holiday due to rail strikes! Obviously this is really inconvenient timing for most of us who have planned on travelling.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union are set to walk out from 5pm on Monday May 25 hitting travellers going home and commuters returning to work the next day. 

If you have already bought tickets to travel this weekend then obviously this is not the best news for you! However, you do have rights.

If your train is cancelled and you can’t get home then you should ask station staff for help. They will be prepared for this strike and should be able to arrange alternative transport such as a taxi to your next destination. If you arrange your own transport you might not be able to claim these costs back.

If your train is delayed for half an hour or more then you should find out if your train company has a ‘delay and repay’ scheme where if you are delayed for over half an hour or more you will get compensation of at least half of the cost regardless of the cause of delay. Most of the train companies have these schemes in place so you should be able to claim!

If your train is delayed or cancelled and you decide not to travel, you can claim a full refund by returning the unused ticket at that time to any ticket office or by post to the train company.
