BBC could axe free TV licence

Over 600,000 households currently have a free TV licence but this could soon be a thing of the past

As the BBC is set to take over responsibility for the TV licence from the government, they could cut the free TV licence.

Free TV licences are currently available for everyone aged 75 and over but the BBC could save over £100million by scrapping the free licence if someone in the household works.

The Government is also thinking about forcing the broadcaster to publish the salaries of any employee that earns more than £150,000 a year.

A spokesman said: “We have commissioned Frontier Economics to look at the policy, but they have yet to reach any conclusions on this work.”
