Britain wastes more food than any other country in Europe
It has been revealed that Britain is the worst country in Europe for wasting food.
The equivalent of one tin of baked beans is apparently wasted by each of the UK’s 64 million citizens according to new findings.
Scientists have said that 22 million tonnes of food is wasted in the European Union each year and 80% of this is avoidable.
ITV news says: “Most of the food waste consisted of vegetables, fruit, and cereals, partly due to their short shelf-life, the study found. But discarded meat represented the biggest loss of nitrogen and water resources.”
The study, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, looked at data from six European countries – the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Romania – to estimate levels of food waste in the EU.
A previous study found that 70 per cent of British food waste ends up in the bin while 11 per cent was found to be flushed down the drain.
