News broke today that both British Gas and EDF Energy will be cutting their gas prices this March. British Gas are offering customers a 5.1% cut, while EDF customers will receive a 5% reduction.
The move is good news for those on dual fuel deals or metered tariffs, with both companies claiming that these price reductions could see some existing customers save up to £31 a year. Unfortunately, the cuts leave those on fixed price plans out in the cold.
British Gas and EDF are the last of Britain’s ‘big six’ energy suppliers to announce cuts. E.ON, npower, Scottish Power and SSE have all unveiled their new rates in recent weeks.
This is following pressure on the industry as a whole to slash its gas tariffs.
SSE customers could see discounts of up to 5.3%, while E.ON will offer a 5.1% cut. Scottish Power customers will benefit from a 5.4% reduction, with npower customers receiving around 5.2%. All these price cuts will come into effect in March.
What does this mean for you?
In short, it means that shopping around is more important than ever when it comes to energy switching. (Try my easy gas and electric switch service here)
Critics will say that the timing of the reductions mean we’ll be out of the coldest months of the year. This may be true, but it does give you plenty of time to start weighing up your options, and seeing if you can save by switching your supplier.
There are a number of comparison sites available to help you weigh up your options, including right here at Ashleigh’s! They can all help provide a good idea of what kind of a saving your might or might not be able to get if you switch.
This can be especially handy if your fixed price energy plan is due to end soon. It’s always wise to see if you can save by getting your gas and electricity from the same supplier, too. Not only that, but various suppliers will also be able to offer small additional discounts on your plan when you sign up for paperless billing.
You might even find that you can drive your bills down a little more by opting to pay via Direct Debit, rather than by cash or cheque. Information on these sorts of extra savings can be found on each suppliers’ website, so it’s always worth doing a little homework before you switch.
