Are Costa ripping you off with their drink sizes?

A builder carried out his own experiment after buying a steaming beverage from one of the coffee chain’s self-serve express machines.

The builder was convinced he is being given the same amount of coffee despite paying 30p more, so he filmed himself pouring his large-sized latte into a regular-sized cup.

The man tells his viewers he wants to discover how far his extra 30p is going every morning.

In the video clip he says: “Right. Costa coffee in the morning. Lots of builders, we buy Costa coffee cups in the morning and we’ve noticed an increase in price in 30p between the regular size and the large.

The builder continues: “Right as you can see, that whole large cup of Costa coffee bought from the machine has gone into that regular cup. There you go, country of England, the regular and the large are indeed exactly the same size. Whoops Costa, oh dear.”

The video was posted on Costa’s Facebook page by Paul Hopkinson and has since had over 4 million views, 82,000 shares and 9,000 comments by shocked customers.

Costa responded: “Hi Paul, thanks for taking the time to send in your video! Despite what it looks like I can assure you you’re not being duped in anyway. The regular cups is a 12oz and the large is a 16oz so there is 4 fluid oz in size difference. Plus you also get the extra shot of coffee, hence the price difference! Also for safety reasons there is no way we would be able to fill the cup that high as it would end up burning someone.”
