Facebook users can officially name storms after themselves!

Have you noticed all of the big hurricanes in America have official names? Well soon all UK storms will too be given a name the Met Office has announced.

In a bid to raise interest in the weather, Facebook and Twitter users will be encouraged to suggest names to the MET Office online.

Derrick Ryall, head of the public weather service at the Met Office told the Daily Mail yesterday: ‘The aim is to provide a single authoritative naming system for the storms that affect the UK and Ireland.

We have seen how naming storms elsewhere in the world raises awareness of severe weather before it strikes.

‘We hope that naming storms in line with the official severe weather warnings here will do the same and ensure everyone can keep themselves, their property and businesses protected at times of severe weather.’

Research from America has shown that people fear storms with male names more, even though those with female names tend to do the most damage.

Suggestions can be tweeted to @metoffice using #nameourstorms, sent in via the Met Office Facebook page or by email.
