Food myths could be costing you a fortune!

According to The Mirror, common food myths and misconceptions are costing us almost £300 a year in food that’s chucked away for no good reason.

A total of 353 million litres of milk, 733,000 potatoes and 473,000 tonnes of bread are thrown away unnecessarily!

Here are three of the labels we’ll find on our packaging that need clearing up to help prevent waste!

  • Best Before: Foods with a ‘best before’ date should be safe to eat after the ‘best before’ date, but they may no longer be at their best.
  • Use by: These dates refer to safety. Food can be eaten up to the end of this date but not after even if it looks and smells fine.
  • Sell by/Display until: These dates are for shop staff not for shoppers. Ignore entirely.

Another thing lots of us seem to be getting wrong, is what we can freeze and what we can’t. Everyone knows that freezing things ensures our food has a long life without it having to go to waste once It’s reached its expiry.

Cheese, milk, mushrooms, rice, yogurt, cream and mashed potato can all be frozen. Don’t forget bread, either. Sliced bread can be kept in the freezer, then used as needed this massively extends its working life and cuts down on mould as well as costs. I for one was not aware until now that you could freeze milk so this is a learning experience for everyone!

You CAN also re-freeze meat after it’s been defrosted. Just make sure it’s cooked through between the first and second freezing.
