You may have heard in the news recently that the government are moving to cut down on plastic waste, and now, the water industry are aiming to reduce water bottle waste by having shops offer free water refills to the public.

The move will mean that highstreet shops and businesses will be offering free water refills in every major town and city in England by 2021.

Brands Costa and Premier Inn will reportedly be offering everyone, whether customer or passer-by, free water refills from this March across their stores and hotels across the country.

Currently, only restaurants that sell alcohol are legally required to give away free water.

The new initiative means that the public will be able to easily fill up their bottles without spending a penny, wherever they go, which it is hoped will reduce the amount of bottles being thrown away.

The move is being made in the wake of Prime Minister Theresa May warning that unless there is urgent action, the 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic made since the 50s will triple to 34 billion in 2050.

An app and signs will also be made so that people can easily locate fill-up stations and fountains.

What do you think of the move? Will you be using the filling stations in the future?
