If you are on a low income then there are two pension credits available to you. The guarantee credit and the savings credit. It’s important to spread the word about this one if you think a family member may be eligible. So many people are missing out simply because they aren’t aware that it is available to them.

The guarantee credit tops up your weekly income if it’s below £155.60 for single people or £230.85 for couples.

The savings credit is an extra payment for people who saved some money towards their retirement.

Free TV licence

Did you know that if you are retired and over the age of 60 that you are entitled to a discount on your TV licence. That’s if you are living in residential care. In this case you should only pay £7.20 for your licence.

Even better if you are over 75! You will be entitled to a TV licence completely free of charge.

Help Towards Travel To hospital appointments

Are you over 65 and receiving Pension Guarantee Credit? If so then you should be entitled to another hidden gem. This time it comes in the form of travel costs towards hospital appointments.

If you inform the hospital when you arrive that you want to claim back travel costs, you will be asked to show your tax credit exemption certificate or HC2 certificate.

Winter Fuel Allowance

If you are retired then you should be receiving the winter fuel allowance which aims to help towards heating your home over the cold winter months. Anyone born before May 6 1953 is eligible.

Cold Weather Payment

The cold weather payment scheme is extremely beneficial to lots of people. The Cold Weather Payment is a government grant given to certain qualifying households when the temperature in their area drops below zero degrees celsius for 7 days in a row.
