Here Is How To Avoid Doing Your Housework…

A study carried out in Norway has discovered that doing housework can cause some health problems.

The chemicals used in various cleaning sprays and other liquids which clean our kitchen benches and sinks have been linked to lung damage.

The Norwegian study found that everyday cleaning products can lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

The study included over 5,000 women over 20-years. The study uses data from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS).

The study also found that people who clean for a living were 17% more decline in the function of the lungs function than an average person. Even just everyday clean can cause a 14% more damage to lung functionality than people who don’t clean as much.

The loss of lung functionality could be because the cleaning products expose people to certain chemicals which can cause allergic airways disease.

It is only certain ingredients used in cleaning products that are harmful.

Ingredients that can be harmful include:

  • Benzalkonium chloride: This is an ingredient in disinfectants for floors and other hard surfaces
  • Chlorine-based agents: Used in bleach
  • Limonene: This ingredient it used to make products smell citrusy
  • Isothiazolinones: This is used in some dish washing liquids and laundry cleaners

So, if you want to avoid possible lung problems avoid using products with these ingredients. As a substitute you can use products with:

  • Vinegar: Vinegar can get rid of the build-up in shower heads and taps and unclogging drains. It is also good at cleaning windows and keeping the dye from clothes running in a washing machine.
  • Lemon: You can use lemon to clean wooden chopping boards and clean microwaves. Lemon can also be used to polish cutlery and give cupboards and other places the small citrusy smell as Limonene, without the health implications.
  • Bicarbonate of Soda: This will remove t markings on flooring and clean most surfaces. You can also use it to remove burnt food from grills and keep clothes smelling fresh.

The European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Lung Foundation are the reason for these finding, they have a campaign, the healthy lungs for life campaign, to reduce the number of people living with lung problems. They would like people to stop just using whatever cleaning product is there and actually check what ingredients are in them and avoid potentially harmful one. You should also follow the instructions on the label carefully to avoid other problems.

The campaign also suggests to use wipes instead of sprays. This is because there are less particles to inhale when you use wipes. This means that less of the harmful chemicals will be inhaled, which means they are less harmful to use. Another tip is to open doors and windows when using cleaning products. This will allow the harmful particles will be able to disperse quicker and you won’t inhale as much.

Every year 25,000 people die for COPD. Either, due to Emphysema, damage to the walls in tiny air sacs in the lungs, or sue to chronic bronchitis, mucus plugging inflamed and thickened airways.
