Have you heard of holiday hunger? Some children go hungry when they’re not at school

And teachers are calling for a change.

A quarter of all teachers are calling for holiday breakfast or lunch clubs for pupils to give needy children one decent meal a day.

Some hard up families can’t afford to give their child a decent meal whilst they’re off school during half term. Some pupils end up returning to school skinner through hunger. More than a third of teachers notice this.

A poll for cereals giant Kellogg’s found that one in eight youngsters are not getting a square meal every day without free school lunches or breakfast clubs.

Food bank charity the Trussell Trust backed up the grim findings. It revealed demand for emergency supplies soared by 21% last August.

Its director Adrian Curtis said: “School holidays are especially difficult for low income families whose children usually receive free school meals or support from breakfast clubs.

I find it very sad and upsetting that some children will be going hungry this half term. I often donate to food banks to help out families who are struggling so hopefully these families can visit their local food bank and get help. However, should things like this be happening in 2016? Should there be more done to help low income families who are feeling the pinch?
