Ikea issue urgent safety alert!

You may have seen in the news this morning that Ikea have issued an urgent safety warning after two young children were killed after falling from drawers sold by the retailer.

A two-year-old boy from Pennsylvania died in February 2014 when a Malm chest fell on him and pinned him to a bed.

Three months later, a 23-month-old child from Washington was killed in when a three-drawer Malm chest tipped over.

As a direct result of both of these events The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has now warned people to stop using Ikea’s wardrobes and chests of draws for children unless they are securely attached to the wall.

“CPSC and IKEA are urging consumers to inspect their Ikea chests and dressers to ensure that they are securely anchored to the wall,” a statement said.

“Consumers should move unanchored chests and dressers into storage or other areas where they cannot be accessed by children until the chests and dressers are properly anchored to the wall.”

The company and the consumer panel had heard from 14 reports of tip-over accidents involving MALM chests, resulting in four injuries.

The MALM products began being sold in 2002, and the chests and drawers are available from £49 to £100.

It has been reported that IKEA also knows of three other reports of deaths since 1989 from tip-overs involving other models of IKEA chests and dressers.

Around seven million MALM chests and 20 million other IKEA chests and dressers are involved in the program which will see additional components issued to customers to secure the products.
