Do you drive an Audi car? If so your tax could be about to go up!

You may have seen in the news recently that more than one million European Audi drivers have been affected by the Volkswagen emissions scandal.

US regulators have discovered that Volkswagen has 11 million cars with a ‘cheat switch’ designed to pass emission tests.

Shazia Yamin, a solicitor from the law firm Leigh Day, told the Daily Mail: “Most individuals I have been speaking to are saying they bought these vehicles especially because they got a reduction in tax. So if these vehicles turn out to be less fuel efficient there could be a loss there.”

That’s because in the UK car tax is based on how much carbon dioxide engines produce – with low-emission vehicles paying nothing at all. If it turns out VW has been fixing its results, the band your car falls into could change meaning you pay more tax.

The scandal has now affected 1.42 million Audi drivers in Europe. If your car is affected then another loss may be that drivers may have to pay more for fuel than they expected and also extra repair costs.

There is also expected to be a fall in the price of the vehicles as a direct result of the scandal.

Volkswagen says this affects 11million cars worldwide. The problem relates to Type EA 189 engines, which is used in models such as the Golf, Passat and Audi A3.

Affected Audi model lines include the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, TT, Q3 and Q5.
