The BBC have announced they’re going to delay the licence fee changes for over-75’s until August.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, BBC will be delaying their licence fee changes.

Free tv licences were due to end on the 1st June, but in light of coronavirus, the BBC have decided to delay the change until August 1st. This is great news for over-75s, as they’ll be able to enjoy a free TV licence for a few months longer!

The chairman of the BBC, Sir David Clementi, said “these are exceptional circumstances and now is not the right time”.

It’s great to see large corporations considering the financial impact that the coronavirus outbreak could pose on the general public, and making changes to help.

BBC have confirmed that they will pay for the cost of this delay. In 2019 they announced that only low income households where one individual is eligible for the pension credit benefit would still be eligible for the free tv licence.

To soothe any concerns of the over-75 tv licence holders, the BBC and the government stated they “do not want anyone to be worried about any potential change” to fees at this time.

They said: “The BBC’s priority over the coming period will be to do everything we can to serve the nation at this uniquely challenging time.

As the national broadcaster, the BBC has a vital role to play in supplying information to the public in the weeks and months ahead.”
