Pupils going on strike
Thousands of pupils are set to go on strike in may
I have been contacted by Kelly who is a fan of my Facebook page, Ashleigh Money Saver, as she wanted to make me aware of the pupil strike.
I have been looking into it and it is quite interesting.
A website and Facebook page have been set up called LET our Kids be Kids.
The ‘about us’ section on the website reads; ”We’re a group of Year 2 parents who’ve had enough… enough of endless testing, enough of teachers not being trusted to teach, enough of an Ofsted driven, dull, dry curriculum aimed solely at passing National Curriculum Tests (SATs).
We want our kids to be kids again and enjoy learning for learning’s sake not for Ofsted results or league table figures. Bring back the creativity and the fun – say goodbye to repetition and boredom!
In May children in Year 2 sit a whole weeks’ worth of exams.. these children are 6 or 7 years old!!! All year their curriculum has been centred around comprehension and arithmetic in order to pass these tests. Outdoor learning has decreased, childhood anxiety has increased, games have been replaced with grammar, playing with punctuation.
We can’t see any point to these exams and want an end to them.. we want our kids to be kids again.
Petitions have been signed, letters have been written but no one is listening… this government seems determined to destroy our children’s childhoods and turn education into another privatised commodity.
We think it’s time to use our Parent Power and take our kids out of school in protest for a day on May 3rd before the exams take place – we hope that this will add weight to campaigns for schools to boycott SAT tests for Year 2 pupils.
There’s massive support for our campaign to let our kids be kids on 3rd May. Please join the thousands of other parents nationwide who, on 3rd May 2016, will let their kids be kids!”
So on 3rd May 2016, some parents will be keeping their kids off school in protest. You are encouraged to give your children a day of fun and learning instead.
There are events being set up across the country on 3rd May that you can get involved in.
I do agree kids need more fun and it would be better if they done less exams but I’m not sure how the pupil strike would work for working parents.
Whilst doing some research into this I noticed a lot of teachers were getting behind this idea which is very interesting.
Some schools have said if you get involved they will just mark your child down as ‘educational day’ rather than absent.
