The car tax loophole to look out for!

Have you heard about the new changes being made to car tax rules which could mean you’ll have to pay car tax twice?

This is especially something to look out for if you are thinking of selling your car. If you are thinking of selling, then you should be aware that you can only claim back a full months worth of unclaimed tax. It has been heard that people have handed their car over from one family member to another and had to pay tax twice with no refunds!

It is estimated that due to the new changes in in tax rules, drivers are now handing over an extra £38 million to the government! 

Those of you who are thinking of BUYING a second hand car also need to be careful! If your new car has an in date tax disc you may be forgiven for thinking it’s all sorted, however a new rule means vehicle excise duty is cancelled when a car is sold. Many drivers have been caught out by this and clamped! Be careful this doesn’t happen to you as you may need to pay hundreds to get your car back!

The changes come after the Government announced it was scrapping tax discs in favour of an electronic system which means our paper discs sitting on the inside of our windscreens will soon be no more!

You will need either:

– The 16 digit reference number on your vehicle tax renewal letter.

– The 11 digit reference number on your log book.

– The 12 digit reference number on your New Keeper supplement.

You can also go to a Post Office where you will need:

– Completed V11 reminder.

– MOT test certificate if required.

– The payment shown on the reminder.
