Rumours of a tourist eco tax have been floating around for a year now but there has finally been some firm plans put in place.
A family of 4 could see an extra £80 added to their holiday…
I have put together the information you need and answered any questions you may have on this new tax.
When will the tourist eco tax be introduced?
It comes into force on 1st July 2016
Which destinations will be charging the tax?
Balearic islands – Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza, Formentera,
Do we all have to pay it?
Some people will be exempt from paying the tax;
- Children under the age of 16
- Tourists on subsidised, social vacation programmes
- Those who need to stay in tourist accommodation due to the nature of their work
How much will it cost?
It depends on what time of the year you are holidaying.
Between May and October you will face a tourist tax ranging from 50 cent to €2 per person per night. This will depend on the type of accommodation you stay in – with the upper rate applying to 4* and 5* hotels.
Between November and April for those going to the islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Majorca the rates will be discounted by 50%.
After 10 days of any stay, the rate is cut by 50%.
Who collects the tax charge?
The tax will be paid directly to the hoteliers.
What will this tax be used for?
The tax will be used for a range of things including the development of tourism infrastructure, training in the tourism sector, recovery of cultural heritage, promoting low-season tourism, research and development projects and investments in social and health facilities. But mainly the money contributed by tourists will fund new and exciting projects that all holidaymakers will be able to enjoy.
