Using the timer to reduce your gas or electric heating bills

Heating Bills Timer

Use timers to halve your heating bills.

It is lovely to come home to a warm house in winter. But heating can be expensive, even though it can be tempting to leave it on all day. Fitting a simple timer to your heating system (or using the timer if it is already fitted – many homes already have them) will enable you to more than halve your heating bill.

Sit down and think about when you are usually at home, and when you are usually asleep. Set the heating to come on half an hour before you arrive home from work and you will come home to a toasty warm house. Then, set the heating to go off once you are sound asleep, and to come on again for an hour in the morning as you get ready for work before switching off until you are home.

Using heating carefully in this way really will dramatically reduce your heating bills, and you will not even notice the difference. After all, what is the point of heating your living space when you are not even there to enjoy it? You might as well just throw five pounds down the drain each day!

You can save even more money with your hot water. Had you been leaving the water on all day so it was nice and warm for the washing up after dinner, or for a bath before you go to sleep? There is no need to do this!

If you shower in the morning, just time the hot water to come on half an hour before you wake up, and to stay on for an hour or two, and it will be nice and warm. Or, keep it off until the evening, when you can leave it on for a few hours to do the washing up and have a relaxing bath.

Keeping your house well insulated will also enable you to make the most of your heat. Blocking up drafts in doors, walls, and roof eaves will mean that your house retains heat longer and you do not need to keep the heating on for so long.

Also look out for our new gas and electric comparison section coming Q2 2015 that will help get you on the right tariff to also save you money.
